{Guest Post} Weddings with M2 Photography

Michael and I have had the pleasure working with Synergetic over the years.  We first worked with Jason a few years ago and have been referring them ever since.

As photographers, we rely heavily on the DJ to not only get the guests on the dance floor but to also keep them on the dance floor.  It is the perfect opportunity to capture some candids of both the bride and groom and their guests.  It is a time where most people just let themselves go and have fun.

Some of our best reception shots have been taken when the entertainment was provided by Synergetic.  We’ve worked with several different Synergetic DJs and not once have we had a bad experience.  They’ve always gotten people on the dance floor and did a fantastic job of keeping them out there.

We often have brides and grooms ask us for any recommendations for either a DJ or a band.  We believe having a good DJ is an important part of the overall experience (along with wedding photography ;) ), not just for the bride and groom, but also their guests.

We are fortunate and lucky to have worked with Synergetic in the past.  We are very much looking forward to working with them in 2012 as well as every year after that.

Below are some images from the different DJs we’ve worked with at different 2011 weddings.

Jake & Amy’s Wedding 3.26.11  Occasions
Resident DJ Jason

Jenna & Anthony’s Wedding 7.16.11  Talamore Country Club
Resident DJ Jason

Mark & Natalie’s Wedding 8.27.11  Sandy Run Country Club
Resident DJ Kyle

Ben & Michelle  10.14.11   La Massaria at Bella Vista
Resident DJ Patrick

Emir & Joann  11.26.11   Please Touch Museum
Resident DJ Chris

I’m a photographer, not a DJ, but if I had to give any advice.  I would say, just like everything else, do your homework before selecting any wedding vendor.  Make sure they have positive clientele feedback and that they actually do what they do because they love it.  If you can sense their heart and passion is what you are hiring them for, then,  I would say, you are in good hands.

{Testimonial} Angela and Matthew

Resident DJ Chris

Jennifer Childress Photography

Another wonderful testimonial about Resident DJ Chris.

“I was first introduced to Synergetic Sound and Lighting very early in our engagement after meeting them at a bridal show. Right from the start my (now) husband and I were really excited to book them for our wedding. They sent us home with a DVD that gave a lot of information about their services offered, booking process, and quality of their services. We were completely blown away with the attention to detail and their commitment to providing professionalism. We booked immediately with them and met with Chris, who would be our DJ. From the first meeting, Chris assured us that he would have our entire guest list out on the dance floor all night. He really wasn’t kidding! I have received countless compliments from guests, still 3 months later, that our wedding was the most fun they ever attended. My husband and I gave total creative freedom to Chris to do his thing during the reception, with the exception of a few requested songs we wanted to hear. He really has a great talent in mixing songs together and keeping everyone out on the floor. We really had a blast and wouldn’t change a thing about our experience with Chris or the Synergetic staff. Also, they really take their time in walking you through the song packet and going over all of the details so you have absolutely nothing to worry about during the reception . They usually call customers a few days before the big day, but we instead asked Chris to meet with us for a few drinks to go over everything. He was completely accommodating to our requests. Our day was completely flawless! -Angela and Matthew”

Thanks so much Angela and Matthew! We’re so glad you had such an amazing night!

{Professional Tips} Tips For Choosing A Makeup Artist

Cheekadee Makeup Artists

Heather Fowler Photography

Choosing a makeup artist for your special day can be an overwhelming task – especially when you want to look your absolute best.  Our friend Emily of Cheekadee Makeup Artists shared some great tips with us on how to choose a makeup artist and what to look for.

1. When choosing a makeup artist…make sure that you do your research. Be sure that the person that you are going to hire is not only responsible but has good skills. You can read reviews online at places like Wedding Wire, The Knot, Wedding Bee, etc… Word of mouth is always a good thing as well, as long as you can trust who it is coming from.

2. Be sure to hire someone with not only a great deal of makeup experience, but specific WEDDING makeup

Cheekadee Makeup Artists

Jennider Childress Photography

experience. I cannot tell you how many calls and emails that we have gotten saying that the makeup artist bailed at the last minute because something better came along. A reputable artist would NEVER do that to you!

3. Be sure to schedule at least 2 trial runs with 2 different makeup artists. It is nice to see different looks and that way you can be confident that you are looking your best. Makeup is an art form, and you will find many interpretations of this art form, so choose carefully. You should ‘click’ with your makeup artist on a personal and professional level as well.

4. A good makeup artist will not only have excellent listening skills, but will also be able to tell you when something just won’t translate well. He/she will also recommend a good skin care routine to get your skin in tip-top shape for your wedding.

5. A good makeup artist should be able to do all skin types and skin tones; all ages, all races all features.

6. A good makeup artist does NOT necessarily use airbrush. A good makeup artist will be able to make your skin look flawless but NOT like a masked version of yourself. Your makeup should not only look great in photos, but up close too!

Jennifer Childress Photography

7. Do not wait until the last minute to book. Just like other reputable vendors, a good makeup artist can book out quickly– up to a year in advance.

8. The phrase you get what you pay for very much applies to makeup… At times we get hesitation from potential clients saying that we are ‘too expensive’… nothing could be further from the truth! Once you factor in all of the back and forth email correspondence, the timelines, the scheduling, the trial run, travel, the cost of the high quality products we use, it comes out to be a pretty good deal. If you get a quote from someone for much less, you can almost always bet that they do not have the level of experience and expertise that we do.

Once you have chosen your makeup artist, you should be able to relax and enjoy your big day. Don’t forget to breathe, smile and take in all of the love around you! It is true what they say- your wedding day is the best day of your life! Congratulations!

Saying Goodbye …

Becky Dissinger

Jennifer Childress Photograpy

After three and a half years as part of the Synergetic Team, I’m sad to say goodbye.  It has been a great journey and I’ve met some amazing people and made some great friends along the way.

My husband and I are about to welcome our second daughter, and with a very active 2 and a half year old I’ve decided to stay home with them fulltime.  I will miss the people I’ve met throughout my time at Synergetic and sincerely hope to keep in touch with all of you.

{Testimonial} Private Party

Resident DJ Tristan

Jennifer Childress Photography

On top of the weddings and school dances our DJs do, we also do a number of private parties.  Resident DJ Tristan spun at a teen birthday party a few months back and Michele was kind enough to email Nikki after the event.

“Hi Nikki,
Tristan was great! The kids seemed to have a great time. He was very helpful and accommodating! He was very professional and energetic which worked out well and the party was successful. Thank you for all your help and please let Tristan know how happy we were with him and the party. Thanks again, Michele”

Thanks so much Michele! We’re so glad the party was such a success.
Great job Tristan!

{Professional Tips} Cake, It’s Not Just For Smashing

A couple months back, Stefanie of  Ciao Bella Cakes shared some tips on choosing a baker and cake for your big day for the “Professional Tips” section of our newsletter.  She had some great advice and we wanted to share it with you again – just in case you missed it. If you’re looking for a cake for your next event, give Stefanie a call – she’s very nice and does beautiful work. You can see pictures of her cakes on her website and her Facebook page.

Ciao Bella CakesThe cake is, and should be, an important element to any wedding or special event. For most couples, the cake is an extremely important part of their special day and they have specific and particular desires for how the cake should look, and how it tastes.

A couples style and vision of their special day can be singularly exhibited with the cake. The cake, like the dress, can in and of itself make a statement that will linger with the guests long after the party is over. So, it’s important to make the right statement.

When searching for a bakery to create this important part of your special day, there are some things to consider. First, do they offer tastings? And are the tastings complimentary or is there a fee? The tasting should allow you to meet with one of the bakeries cake designers who can answer all of your questions and is willing to sit with you for a time to go over details. And of course, to taste cake! You’ll likely want to ask if the cakes are made fresh from scratch or with pre-made products, as well as if the cakes are frozen or not. There are so many flavors, no bakery can give you samples for every possibility, but ask what their full flavor options are, or if they take special requests should you have one.

Ciao Bella CakesFor the design side of things, finding a bakery that you really ‘click’ with can be important. To get a cake that really represents who you are and what your style is, finding someone who understands you will be vital. There are endless possibilities with design elements for your cake. The cake can be designed based on the bride’s dress, on the invitation design … or maybe you’ll even design your wedding around the cake! Be sure to explore different ideas, and think outside the box.

There are a few other things to consider or ask as well. What are your plans for a topper? Is the top tier of the cake included for you to save for your anniversary? What is the delivery fee? Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

With so many details to plan for the wedding, the cake should be a fun & exciting one! Don’t let the cake fade into the background. Let it make a statement! Let your guests dive into their slices wanting more because it’s so delicious! ‘Cause let’s face it, the cake is not just for smashing.

{Testimonial} Private Party

Resident DJ Kyle Emig

Jennifer Childress Photography

Kelly got this great email from June – she hired us to DJ a surprise party a couple of months back.

“Good afternoon Kelly,
I want to thank you for all of your help.  You made it very easy, when I was a little frantic, (my DJ dropping out at the last minute).

The DJ you sent was perfect, I wasn’t even in the room 5 minutes and I was getting compliments on him. My guests were so impressed with him that they asked for his business cards.  My 17 yr old niece thought he was the greatest!  My 2 yr old nephew thought he was cool because the DJ picked him up and showed him the sound board. He was really good with the kids.

I cannot say enough good things about you, the DJ and your company, feel free to use me as a reference. When I need a DJ, you are the ones I am going to call. -June”

Thanks so much for the great review June!  Great job Kyle!

Choosing A Venue

A few months back, Lori from Conroy Catering shared some tips on choosing a venue with us for the “Professional Tips” section of our newsletter.  She had some great advice and we wanted to share it with you again – just in case you missed it. We work with the staff at Conroy a lot and they’re absolutely wonderful. If you need a venue for an upcoming event, check out Knowlton Mansion, Glen Foerd mansion and Laurita Winery.
Knowlton Mansion

Heather Fowler Photography

Choosing a venue is the hardest part of wedding planning. It is the only part of the planning that is not molded around your tastes. Flowers are customized to your colors; Musicians play music you enjoy, the venue is the venue. Sure, you can change the feel of the room with your décor and lighting but the overall look of the venue is hard to drastically change.   Your venue and catering is going to be the largest chunk of your budget and this makes brides feel more pressure to find the perfect location for their dream wedding.

The first step to narrowing down your dream location is to search for venues that appeal to you and there are a ton of online resources for this as well as bridal magazines. While you are searching be sure to look at past brides reviews listed about the venue on these search sites. Email or call any venues that interest you, ask for packages and pricing.   If you are only considering one or two date options make sure you ask if they are available BEFORE you make an appointment. There is nothing worse than finding your dream location that fits perfectly into your budget only to find out that it is already booked on the only date your church is open.   If you are flexible about your date then just make sure they have open dates in the time frame you are considering.

Glen Foerd Mansion

Faith West Photography

Once you get your packages review what they include and pricing. If the packages don’t fit into your budget ask the venue if they have any dates they can work on pricing for or if they are running any specials. Sometimes if you are flexible on your dates and menu the venue can work with you. Just remember they are working with you so you may have to give something up if they are working on a custom package with in your budget.

The venue search can seem very overwhelming especially at the tour it is a lot of information thrown at you in a short period of time. Take all the materials that the venue gave to you home and review them at your own pace. Be sure to compare apples to apples, the best price may not be the best value. Make a chart or spread sheet to compare the venues package and inclusions so you can make an educated decision. The main thing to look for in comparing packages is the tax and service charge. Is it already included in the pricing or is it additional? The tax and service charge can make a huge difference in your budget.

Laurita Winery

Rebecca Barger Photography

As I am sure you have seen on certain wedding shows a large group does not always make things easier, sure they are your best friends and their options matter but while searching for your venue smaller groups are easier, you will be talking about money in appointments and you may not feel comfortable talking budget around a large group. Bring only the decision makers to venue tours and then show your bridal party the fabulous venue you secured at a later time!

And don’t worry once you get your venue the planning gets a lot easier! Happy planning!
